All you need to know about shipping cargo overseas and domestically

Do I need a Customs Broker?

When importing goods into the U.S., there is no legal requirement to use a customs broker. However, many importers hire a customs broker to guarantee the success of their shipment. A licensed customs broker helps the shipper avoid penalties by making sure that the documentation is filed correctly. Customs brokers offer services such as tariff classification review and ensuring the import complies with government regulations.

Why is my shipment stuck at customs?

Getting a message that your import is on hold at customs can be stressful for you as a shipper. While there are several reasons why your shipment is stuck at customs, common causes include missing paperwork and incorrect valuation. The importation of illegal cargo is another reason why customs holds your importation. When this happens, the best action is to hire a customs broker to release your goods.

To begin importing agricultural products like coffee into the U.S., the shipper should understand the rules and regulations. Agencies like the CBP, FDA, and USDA set the requirements for bringing in agricultural products. The requirements also include specific documentation and permits. For example, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requires a permit to import plant products like coffee beans. Talk to a customs broker for a detailed explanation of the necessary paperwork and assistance in getting started.

How to ship a car into the United States?

There are various regulations that a shipper should be aware of before importing a car into the U.S. Along with following the laws, all the paperwork must be completed and correct. Using a freight forwarder to find a shipping company can help you save time and money.

What is the Customs Clearance process about?

Customs clearance is the process of moving goods through customs and into a country from another. The purpose of customs clearance is to ensure that the shipper pays all the duties and imports comply with regulations. In the U.S., the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) controls the flow of goods through customs.

Should I choose a Freight Forwarder or a Courier to move my shipment?

The choice of transportation when moving a shipment depends on your end goal. Couriers are used for domestic transport and are ideal for shipments of less than 154.3 lbs. or 70kgs. While couriers are vans, trucks are larger and carry much more cargo. Freight forward work with a network of trucks, vessels, and aircraft to ship goods. While couriers are for door-to-door shipping, freight forwarders transport cargo internationally.

I am first-time exporter and need help with the logistics. Where to begin?

Exporting can be challenging for first-time exporters. The best way to ensure the logistics process goes smoothly is by getting help from a freight forwarder. Forwarders guide shippers through the transportation process from start to finish. Freight Forwarders also can provide other solutions like warehousing solutions and help with the proper documentation.

What is the bill of lading?

The bill of lading (BL) is a legal document that a carrier issues to serve as a receipt of a shipment. It allows the person holding it to claim ownership of the cargo. The information on the BL can include the type, quantity, and destination of the goods the carrier is moving. Most types of shipments will require a BL when shipping.

When bringing goods into the U.S., you can import them under your name. Similarly, businesses can import under their company’s name. It is important to note that certain agencies require the importer to have a license or permit before importing.

How long will take for my shipment to arrive?

Many factors determine the time it will take for the shipment to arrive at its destination. For example, shipping by air can take around 5 – 10 days. Moving goods by sea may take from 20 to 45 days or longer. Other factors like distance, route, and the customs clearance process can impact the duration. Delays from congestion and bad weather conditions can also arise and affect how long a shipment can take.

What is the most cost-effective way of shipping my cargo: Air or Ocean?

The most cost-effective way to ship cargo internationally is by ocean. While moving goods by sea is less expensive than by air, the shipping process can take longer than by ocean. Transporting cargo by air tends to be faster but more costly.
