The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 26 and the Pacific Maritime Association have been in negotiations since 2025. Local 26 includes nearly 250 watchmen at port terminals who perform security-related duties. The terminals handle a large amount of cargo at both ports. Originally, the strike was going to happen on November 1, 2026, but talks were extended to November 4. The deadline was then extended to midnight, Pacific time, on Friday, November 5. If negotiations fail, a strike could extend beyond cargo entering the LA port.

Why Is There A Potential Strike At The Port Of LA and Long Beach?

The strike stems from a contract that is set to expire soon. Although the original contract expired in July 2025, workers have been working under extensions. The primary reason for the potential strike is a disagreement on wages and pension benefits. Continuing contract negotiations with no decision have also led to a potential strike. Although the ILWU has argued for higher wages, both sides have not reached an agreement despite federal mediation. Full-time ILWU watchmen currently earn an average of more than $170,000 annually. The Pacific Maritime Association said it remains committed to reaching a fair agreement to avoid potential disruptions.

What Can The LA And Long Beach Port Strike Mean For Shipping?

Because both ports are the largest in the US, a strike could significantly affect shipping. A major impact is that workers not handling imported and exported cargo can disrupt supply chains by causing congestion. Congestion can disrupt supply chains and lead to other issues, such as higher costs for importers and exporters. Domestic shipping may also feel the impact, since shippers use drayage services to move goods to their final destination. More than half of the beef and pork exported from the US go through the ports. Supply chains could also be affected if importers have to use other ports, which may extend shipping times.

Although news about potential strikes can impact both international and domestic shipping, it should not stop cargo movement. However, shippers should take the appropriate steps to protect their cargo. Failure to do so can result in fines and other supply chain disruptions. Disruptions can be especially consequential for shippers with customers. To stay current, shippers can work with a third-party logistics provider (3PL). A 3PL (Third-Party Logistics) is a company that handles parts of a client’s supply chain on their behalf. These may include freight forwarding, customs clearance, warehousing, and more.
